On Monday, Indiewire had the opportunity to participate in a town hall discussion entitled “What Television Can and Can’t Tell Us About Women, the Drug War and Mass Incarceration,” featuring Piper Kerman and sponsored by the Drug Policy Alliance. While Piper Chapman was the name given to the show’s main character - and it was her perspective that initially introduced us to the world of Litchfield Penitentiary - the character was a portrayal of Piper Kerman, the author of “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” It took “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan and Netflix to turn Kerman’s memoir into the series that we have come to know and love. “ Orange is the New Black” fans know that the series is based on a true story.

Told in simple, emotionally-honest prose, with a mischievous bite, this is a novel about the journey we all must take to learn who we are it is about loving and letting go. Queenie thought her first letter would be the end of the story. As the volunteer points out, 'Even though you've done your travelling, you're starting a new journey too.' However, both Thompson and Okorafor guard against this tendency by immersing us in the social background, without any special explanations. Of course, there is always the danger that a white anglophone reader from a hegemonic country and culture (i.e., somebody like myself) might find any such futuristic depiction of the developing world to be alluringly “exotic,” if only on account of its unfamiliarity. Both novels go explicitly against the common tendency to set such narratives in big cities of the Global North. The first is Nnedi Okorafor’s Lagoon, equally wonderful, but in an entirely different way. Tade Thompson’s extraordinary new SF novel Rosewater is the second recent book I have read with the premise of extraterrestrials arriving in Nigeria. WARNING: numerous spoilers, since I cannot really discuss the novel without them I liked learning a bit more about Tori, even though I still hate her. Nor is characterization sacrificed in this book. It’s not because I am a particularly quick reader, but because The Awakening is akin to book-crack! There is never a dull moment, never a spot where I’m sitting there thinking, OH DEAR GOD JUST GET TO IT. I read The Awakening in four hours, yes I am boasting. I would love to post a summary, but it would be unfair to those who have not read The Summoning yet. Chloe is back, along with AHH -GUSH- Derek! The What The F-ery continues from the very opening. It is a continuation of the most excellent novel, The Summoning. However, Kelly Armstrong’s book entitled The Awakening has nothing to do with Chopin. It’s a bit strange, but when I see The Awakening as a title, I always think of Kate Chopin. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Ironside black novelShe also learned how to deal with the fae like a badass. I found that Kaye had a much better character arc in this book and her storyline was more intense and emotional. Also, I found the ending to be pretty satisfying and really really cute. I caught some major foreshadowing for The Folk of the Air series that blew my damn mind so thoroughly I haven't recovered yet. There were some pretty cool twists, although a few were a little predictable but still enjoyable. I have loved them with all my heart since book one and I never stopped. Not counting Kaye, Roiben, Corny, and Lutie-loo. I also cared a lot more about the characters than I did previously. The plot was much more interesting, fast-paced, and emotional. It was still a little dull but not to the same extent as book one. I am pleased to report that Ironside was a significant improvement to Tithe. I wanted to complete Roiben and Kaye's story before moving on to another one. Honestly, I don't know why the series order would be set like this but.oh well. Valiant, the second book in the series, has different protagonists. Yes, I read the third book in the series before the second one and it seems like I've made the right choice. 5/10/2023 0 Comments The straight man richard russoWhen the project was announced earlier this month, it was apparent that AMC was keen on getting this show up and running with haste, and sure enough, this fast turnaround came about quite swiftly. Both of them think they’re doing the right thing, but only time will reveal the consequences of their actions, and what permanent damage it will do to, not only the family, but their relationship. But with Skyfall acting as ground zero to numerous growing threats, including rogue genetically engineered proxy worms, and Bastian’s rebellion, relationships and family troubles may be the least of their worries. Not to mention Elish’s mental state continues to deteriorate. Skyfall is in a dire place, but even with their world falling apart around them, the royal family is still fighting amongst themselves. And not just the royal family, Reaver and Killian are on opposing sides, with Killian defending Elish, and Reaver defending Silas. Bastian Gibel is determined to right the wrong he’d made centuries before, and while the old man works on a way to eradicate immortals once and for all, the threat of the proxy worms grows stronger. Plus, being anything close to an ‘ethical person’ requires daily thought and introspection and hard work we have to think about how we can be good not, you know, once a month, but literally all the time. This question has plagued people for thousands of years, but it’s never been tougher to answer than it is now, thanks to challenges great and small that flood our day-to-day lives and threaten to overwhelm us with impossible decisions and complicated results with unintended consequences. ‘Enormously enjoyable, useful and readable’ – The Times ‘An absolute breeze to read funny and enlightening and revealing’ – Guardian * From the writer and executive producer of the award-winning Netflix series The Good Place that made moral philosophy fun: a foolproof guide to making the correct moral decision in every situation you ever encounter, anywhere on earth, forever * |
